Orguiel and Vanity

 

Vanity, "orgueil" (haughty spirit) are manifestations of the false ego. This name is unusual for those who have not read the Bhagavad-gîtà and the Bhaktimàrga (the Book of The Path). Many call «false ego», the ego.

Etymological dictionaries give the origin of the word vanity: «vanitas, -atis», state of emptiness, non-reality, vain appearance, lie, deception, fraud, frivolity, lightness.” Note that in vanity, there is «vain», «useless».

The consequences of the false ego, confusion on the mind are that it prevents it from living its true nature, its life as it could be, simply and in all truth.

Other consequences are by-products of vanity and pride combined: selfishness, egocentrism, greed, envy, plunder, indifference, cruelty, master desire, dissatisfaction, attachment, jealousy, injustice, domination, psychorigidity, greed, avarice, lying, deceit, bad faith, vexation, humiliation of others, contempt, feeling of superiority, racism, ostracism, widowhood, hypocrisy, feeling of failure, feeling of inferiority, the feeling of humiliation, dishonor, blindness, backbiting, hatred and intolerance. The Victim of These Evils

It should be noted that the first victim of "orgueil" and vanity is the one they dominate. Hatred poisons the hater. If the human is close to his animality, without the necessary hindsight, he becomes the prey of his nature and the object of his instincts, his desires, his needs and his desires.

No one is immune to Grace. We must not be deceived by appearances. Some, who are considered spiritual, will refuse the truth on the pretext that it is not in the image of their concepts. Others, who appeared a thousand miles from any spirituality, will be touched directly in the heart* by Grace.

* Heart: sensitivity. The mind has sensitivity, among other things. There is also soul sensitivity. The word heart can mean either sensitivity.

The Animal Part

In a person who has no hindsight on his animality, vanity and "orgueil" take a great place on reason and annoyances have serious consequences on his mood. Such a person will be subject to the desire to amass possessions and attached to these possessions to such an extent that paranoia will invade him, along with the fear of losing everything.

In the event of adverse circumstances, such as bankruptcy, theft, spoliation, natural disaster, this person will see «his whole life collapse». The sincere seeker must absolutely defy these feelings of pride and vanity that should not be confused with self-esteem, pride. "When a seeker finds the truth, he is moved by Grace." (Bhaktimàrga 105)

Suppress These Tendencies

For the observer of The Path experiencing a frustration related to his "orgueil", a feeling of aggressiveness, that he gets back in his center. He can practice what has been revealed to him.

For you, seekers who have not received the Revelation, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and take the necessary step back on these feelings of frustration, vanity, wounded "orgueil" that, you know, can lead to aggression, violence, jealousy, backbiting and suffering.

Do not accept that the false ego takes the step and lowers you to a level of consciousness that is a dead end. Do not be carried away by vanity, "orgueil". Beware of it like the plague and every time you see yourself reacting by following the inspiration of these bad advisors, take a step back while waiting to be able to put your spirit back in the right place by the knowledge of the appropriate techniques and the firm will to do it.
